How do we calculate your rent?
The government says that all councils and housing associations should work out their rents in the same way. The aim is that by 2012, rents for similar homes owned by councils and housing associations in the same area will be comparable, no matter who the landlord is. This is known as the target rent.
What happened to rents after April 2003?
The government says that councils should be charging the full target rent for each of their properties by 2012. Your existing rent will move towards the target rent for your home in 9 steps between 2003 and 2012.
Your rent will be worked out by a new government formula, using the current national average rent of £55.05 and adjusted to reflect three things: -
- The number of bedrooms in your home
- The average wage in South Yorkshire
- The value of your home
70% of your rent will be based on the number of bedrooms in your home and the average wage in South Yorkshire and 30% on the value of your home.
Your right to appeal
If you think your home has been valued incorrectly you have the right to appeal. You can also obtain the leaflet that explains this process at your local area housing office or First Point at Howden House.
A leaflet explaining your rent in detail, is also available.
