How do I repay my rent arrears?
If you are a current council tenant your rent is due and should be paid every week. If you have debts of any kind you should contact a debt advisor who will be able to help you. Information is available in the Sheffield Homes Debt Advice Leaflet.
If the property you live in has district or communal heating, furniture, or other services, these will be included in your rent. Sheffield Homes also collects water charges as part of the rent on behalf of the water supplier.
If you get behind with your rent payments you will be "in arrears". If you get into arrears, you should immediately contact your local area housing office.
Failure to repay your rent arrears
Failure to pay off the arrears will result in Sheffield Homes serving a "Notice of Seeking Possession" on behalf of the City Council. This is the first legal step we take before taking Court Action through the county court to recover possession of your property.
Housing Benefit
Housing Benefit (new window) is help towards your rent. Claim forms are available from local area housing offices. If you think you may qualify please claim straight away as benefits may not be backdated. If you are on Housing Benefit and you are sent a re-application form, please return it promptly if you want your benefit to continue.
If you do not pay your rent when it is due, you could end up in Court and lose your home. It could also affect your chances of moving to another council house.
