Burngreave

Area and Properties

Central Burngreave is the hub of the Burngreave area, containing large numbers of commercial buildings and amenities that serve the entire Burngreave area.
It includes the Wicker, which has numerous shops and restaurants, and is a major gateway into the city. The properties in this area are mainly council flats.

Investment

As part of the decent homes program, the properties in the area will under go improvement, particularly to kitchens and bathrooms, around 2010-2011.

Community Centres

The closest community centre for Central Burngreave residents is Burnbank community centre on Kilton Place.

Garages

There are eleven garages in the Burngreave area, located under the flats on Spital Lane. They are all secure and in good condition.

Shopping

Central Burngreave contains a large number of shops, including comic book stores, supermarkets, hairdressers, a bookmakers, a fishing store, a pharmacy and butchers.
These are mostly located on Spital Hill and The Wicker.
There are also a great number of restaurants, cafes and fast food servers, particularly on The Wicker.

There are two local facilities for childcare.
  • The Ellesmere Childrens Centre, at 5 Maxwell Street provides full time day care for children aged 6 months to 5 years.
  • The Burngreave Childrens centre at 19 Spital Street, also offers day care to under fives, but also has classes for parenting, antenatal, postnatal and healthy eating.

There are several doctors in Central Burngreave.
  • The Burngreave Surgery at 5 Burngreave Road can be reached with a short car ride but is close enough to walk to.

One of the best ways to stay abreast of local news in the area is the Burngreave Messenger, a free local paper that is sent out to residents and businesses. It can also be viewed online at http://www.burngreavemessenger.org/

Allotments

There are three allotments in the area, at Grimesthorpe, Hinde House Lane and Roe Wood. Anyone wanting a plot can call 0114 273 4528 for more information.

Cash Points

There is a Cash machine located on Ellsmere Road and one on Spital Hill, inside The Ozmen Supermarket. Please note that the machine in The Ozmen Supermarket charges a fee. There is also a cash machine on The Wicker - this also charges a fee.

Parks

Abbeyfield Park is located near the top of Burngreave Road. As well as open spaces, it has a children’s climbing frame and play area, two areas for football, an area for cricket and a bowls green. Local children designed the side gate of the park.
Another nearby park is Somerset Street Open Space, just off Burngreave Road. It has a basketball court and swing set.

Bin Collections

Black bins are collected every Wednesday; Blue bins are collected every four weeks, on a Monday.
