About the area

Image of the north direction
Within the Area is Ecclesfield Parish Council (new window) comprising of four distinctive communities, High Green, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield and Grenoside.  It is an area of mixed farmland and private housing with some social housing.

The Chapeltown and High Green areas lie approximately seven miles due north of the city centre and borders on the open countryside.  There is a sizeable shopping centre at Chapeltown.  This part of the area has few health and social related problems.

Ecclesfield is around 5 miles north of Sheffield city centre.  Woods and farmland surround it and the council estates within differ in size and are surrounded by private owner occupied properties.

Northwest of the Area is the “village” of Grenoside.  The council estates at Grenoside are fairly small and are surrounded by private owner occupied properties.

To the east, about 6 miles north of Sheffield city centre, is Thorpe Hesley.  Whilst it lies outside the city boundary there is a small amount of council properties that are owned and managed by Sheffield City Council.

To the west of the area are Southey and Owlerton that are dominated by several large public housing estates with over half of the housing owned by the Local Authority.  It is made up from a number of distinct communities including Parson Cross, Southey, Foxhill, Binsted and Shirecliffe.  The area is characterised by a mix of pre and post-war housing and 1960s maisonettes and flats.  There are a number of small local shopping centres and many green spaces including several large parks.  There is a small rural area to the northwest with farms and accessible woodland.  The area’s population structure mirrors that of the city as a whole, with slightly higher proportions of households with children, single parents and pensioners.
