Remember,
Trees
- keep our air supply fresh by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.
- cut down noise pollution by acting as sound barriers
- improve water quality by slowing and filtering rain water
- provide food and shelter for wildlife
Did You Know?
Sheffield Council Community Forester Jez Platts organised the planting of over 460 large standard trees between October 2007 - April 2008 as part of a strategic tree renewal project between Sheffield Homes in partnership with the P&C Trees and Woodlands department.
Many school children and young people right across Sheffield helped to plant trees from Lowedges Primary in the South West to Angram Bank school at High Green in the North - including young people from Brendan Ingle's Boxing academy to students from Longley Park Sixth Form college.
Community Forestry is about the successful establishment of trees and woodlands in the urban environment leading to benefits related to people's health, economic regeneration, community development, education and nature conservation.
For it to succeed it has to involve local people, schools and community groups in all the different elements from the planning and decision making through to implementation, planting and tending the trees.
The summer of 2007 saw Jez visiting as many Tenants & Residents Associations (TARAs) as possible spreading the Community Forestry word and gaining their support for tree planting locations then writing to all Sheffield Homes' tenants who will see these trees from their homes.
Jez is currently finding new planting sites and seeking all key stakeholder's agreement - and ordering more trees to plant!
